Rhodes edges Millsaps 57-55 in late thriller

JACKSON, Miss. — Rhodes College edged Millsaps College 57-55 in a conference men’s basketball matchup Friday night at the Hangar Dome. The game was closely contested, with both teams exchanging the lead nine times and tying five times, according to sources.

Junior Davion James led Millsaps with 23 points, including four three-pointers, and added two assists and four steals, matching his season high in steals. Senior Caleb Kent contributed 14 points and seven rebounds, while classmate Colt Donley scored 10 points on six free throws, the sources said.

The game saw Millsaps take an early 4-0 lead after back-to-back baskets from Kent. Rhodes responded with a strong inside game, tying the score at 8-8. James made a significant step-back jumper with 14:15 remaining in the first half, energizing the home crowd. He later hit a three-pointer with 6:44 left in the half to give Millsaps a 19-18 lead. The teams finished the first half tied at 28-28, with both defenses holding opponents to about 32.8% shooting.

In the second half, Millsaps took a 9-0 run early, highlighted by a steal and fast-break layup from Kent at 14:40. Rhodes gradually mounted a comeback, taking a 49-48 lead with 4:33 remaining after a three-pointer. The lead grew to five points before James scored a clutch layup with 2:17 remaining and made two free throws 51 seconds later, shrinking the deficit to one.

Rhodes responded quickly, stealing the ball and converting an and-one to push its lead to 56-52 with 23 seconds left. James answered with a three-pointer with eight seconds remaining to make it a 57-55 game. The Lynx missed their second free throw after sinking the first, and Millsaps’s desperation heave near half court rimmed out as time expired.

Rhodes secured the win, splitting the season series with Millsaps, both road teams winning in their matchups.
