Prairie View Softball Completes Series Sweep of Alcorn with 7-0 Win

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — Prairie View A&M built an early lead and never looked back, winning 7-0 over visiting Alcorn State on Saturday afternoon at Lady Panthers Softball Stadium. The victory completed a sweep of the series in SWAC play.

The Panthers, now 25-14 overall and 17-1 in conference, used a balanced offensive attack and strong pitching to shut out the Braves, who fell to 13-30 overall and 1-17 in SWAC games. Prairie View scored in each of the first five innings, starting with a run in the first when Caidence Martin singled to left field, driving in Isabela Rodriguez.

Prairie View added a run in the second and third innings on RBI singles from Kayla Zaid and Martin. The hosts pushed the lead to 5-0 in the fourth with RBI singles from Zaid and Rodriguez. In the fifth, pinch hitter Hannah Comeaux doubled to score Kearstin Tinsley, and Maritza Martinez followed with a run-scoring single.

Zaid finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Martin was 2-for-2 with two RBIs before being replaced in the fifth inning. Comeaux, limited in action, went 1-for-1 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.

On the mound, Prairie View used a trio of pitchers to keep Alcorn off the scoreboard. Madalyne Martinez earned the win, improving to 1-2 after pitching 3.1 innings and allowing three hits. Gabrielle Larson threw 1.2 innings, and Caden Young closed with two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out one. Chiara Olison took the loss for Alcorn, dropping to 7-16 after surrendering seven runs on 11 hits in six innings.

The Braves managed five hits, with Yahnya Acevedo going 2-for-2. Teammates Jamyiyah Cotten, Rajayla McBride, and Karmen Bernard each added singles. Despite the offensive efforts, Alcorn stranded eight runners and was unable to score against Prairie View’s pitching staff.

Alcorn travels to Southeastern Louisiana for a nonconference game Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Hammond, Louisiana. Follow Alcorn State Sports on Twitter (@BravesSports) for updates, and on Instagram (@AlcornSports) and YouTube (Braves Sports Network) for behind-the-scenes coverage of Braves athletics.
