Prairie View A&M beats Jackson State 10-4 in season opener
Jackson State University lost its season opener 10-4 to Prairie View A&M in non-conference baseball action Friday night at Trustmark Park. The game was part of the MLB HBCU Power Series.
Jackson State, which fell to 0-1, collected eight hits. Isaac McClenty led the team with two hits and two RBIs. Tyree Reed also had two hits, including a two-run double in the ninth inning.
Jackson State starter Kade Walker took the loss, working 1.1 innings and allowing six runs on four hits with two strikeouts. The Tigers used four pitchers overall. Trae Burton and Marcus Smith combined to pitch the final five innings, allowing one run on three hits.
Prairie View A&M’s Beau Beaty earned the win, allowing one run on three hits while striking out five over five innings. Isaac Herrera pitched the final four innings for the save.
Prairie View A&M jumped out early, scoring three runs in the first inning. Jordan Williams and Tyvon Moore contributed RBI singles, and Corie Lockette hit an inside-the-park home run in the third to push the Panthers’ lead to 7-0. Jackson State responded with a run in the bottom of the third, but Prairie View A&M added three more runs in the fourth and seventh innings to extend its lead to 10-1.
The Tigers scored three runs in the ninth, highlighted by Reed’s two-run double, but the comeback fell short. Jackson State returns to play Saturday night against Alabama A&M at 6 p.m.
