Owls Tennis Splits Weekend Matches, Women Fall to Covenant, Win at Maryville

Columbus, Miss. — The Mississippi University for Women tennis teams played two non-conference matches over the weekend. The women’s team lost both matches, while the men’s team went 1-1, according to school officials.

The women’s team was swept in both matches, falling 7-0 to Covenant College in Georgia on Saturday and 7-0 to Maryville College in Tennessee on Sunday. In Saturday’s match against Covenant, the doubles team of Austin Hays and Bailey Flynn won their match 6-0. However, Covenant claimed the other two doubles matches and swept all six singles contests in straight sets.

On Sunday, Maryville dominated play, winning all nine matches across doubles and singles to secure the victory. The Owls’ doubles duo of Juan Garcia and Marcos Fernandez won a close 7-6 match in second doubles, but Maryville took the remaining doubles points. In singles, Maryville opened with a 2-0 lead, but MUW rallied with four straight wins in singles, including victories from Jorge Ortiz, Sandro Giangregorio, Garcia, and Fernandez, clinching the team win with a 4-3 score.

The men’s team’s Saturday match against Covenant resulted in a 4-3 loss. The Owls earned a point in doubles with wins from Ortiz and Giangregorio at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, respectively. In singles, Covenant won all six matches, with five in straight sets. Alvaro Bardales split sets at fifth singles but ultimately lost the third set 10-4.

On Sunday, the Owls defeated Maryville 4-3 at the University of Tennessee indoor courts. Maryville took the doubles point by winning two of three matches, but MUW’s Juan Garcia and Marcos Fernandez won their doubles match 7-6. In singles, Maryville led 2-0 before the Owls won four consecutive matches, including Ortiz, Giangregorio, Garcia, and Fernandez, to take the lead. Fernandez’s win at sixth singles sealed the team victory and improved MUW’s season record to 4-3, including a 4-1 mark in the spring segment.

The teams are scheduled to host Huntingdon College next Saturday at the Garrett Courts.
