Ole Miss Track & Field’s Akaoma Odeluga Named SEC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
Ole Miss track and field athlete Akaoma Odeluga has been named the Southeastern Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. The junior All-American achieved the award after her standout performance at the Virginia Challenge.
Odeluga’s third-round shot put throw of 19.23 meters (63 feet, 1.25 inches) marked a personal record and is the second-best in SEC and Ole Miss history, behind Olympian Raven Saunders. Her mark ranks her seventh all-time outdoors in collegiate history, ninth in combined indoor and outdoor collegiate history, and 19th overall in American history, according to the conference.
The performance also places Odeluga second in the NCAA this season, second in the United States across indoor and outdoor seasons, fourth on the world outdoor list, and eighth on the world absolute list. Only she and former Arizona State champion Maggie Ewen have surpassed 63 feet in the shot put and 210 feet in the hammer throw in collegiate history.
Ole Miss will take a break this week before returning to competition May 2 at the LSU Invitational, the university said.
