NWCC Tennis Teams Fall to Top-15 MGCCC in Conference Match

The Northwest Mississippi Community College men’s and women’s tennis teams traveled to Perkinston to face top-15 ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College on March 24. The women lost 3-6, and the men fell 0-9, according to team reports.

Despite the defeat, the women’s team had notable performances. Sophomore Meg Daves won her singles match against Paige Baronich in two sets, dropping only five games overall. Freshman Ava McCain rallied from a set down to win in a ten-point match tiebreaker, providing a highlight for the team.

The men’s team did not secure any wins, but two matches went to ten-point tiebreakers. Sophomores Holden Cooke and Brady Holliman both narrowly lost in their singles matches, with Cooke dropping his in a 10-4 tiebreaker and Holliman in a 10-6 tiebreaker.

Northwest will play Hinds Community College at the Cleon McKnight Tennis Center in Raymond on March 27 at 2 p.m. The Hinds women’s team is ranked 16th nationally, though its men’s team is unranked.

In doubles action, NWCC’s Claudia Lopez Chaparro and Laura Cámara Blanco defeated MGCCC’s Victoria Ros Fabuel and Isona Arnaus 8-5. However, the team lost the other doubles matches, including an 8-4 setback for Brooke Kicker and Ava McCain.

In singles, Daves and McCain secured wins for NWCC, while others, including Laura Cámara Blanco and Ángela Ortiz-Sánchez, lost in straight sets. The men’s team faced tough competition, with only one player, Carlos Diaz, winning a set in singles play.
