Senatobia, Miss. — Northwest Mississippi Community College’s volleyball team improved to 6-0 with a three-set sweep of Coahoma Community College on Tuesday at Howard Coliseum.
The Rangers won each set convincingly, opening with a 25-3 victory thanks to a strong serving game that caused multiple errors from Coahoma. They followed with a 25-7 win in the second set and secured the match with a 25-12 victory in the third.
Head Coach Allyson Burchett praised her team’s focus and effort. “I’m very pleased with how we came in, and we took care of business,” she said. “Our focus was good, and I was proud of that. We were able to sub and get everybody some time tonight, so that’s always a win for your program.”
Northwest’s offense was efficient, hitting .431 as a team with 31 kills from 10 players. Sofia Gonzalez led with 10 kills, followed by Ariana Woods and Valerie Hurdle with five each. Dallas White contributed a team-high 16 assists and seven aces, setting a season-high for individual aces. White also had a significant role in the team’s total of 17 aces.
Defensively, the team was able to limit attack opportunities from Coahoma, with solo blocks from Talley Taylor and Jersi Wilson and block assists from Alayna Fuller, Payton Davis, and Kylee Garcia. All 16 players saw action and contributed to the win, according to sophomore setter Chloe Rodriguez.
Rodriguez emphasized the importance of team development, stating, “Everyone needs to be comfortable on the court, and these are the games you can get that comfort because if you make a mistake, you can laugh it off and keep going.”
Looking ahead, Northwest will travel to Pensacola, Florida, for a tournament on Friday, facing Highland Community College and Snead State Community College at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively. Rodriguez said the team faces tough opponents and must stay focused.
“We have to keep level-headed,” she said. “The end goal is for us to get rings. That’s what all of us sophomores want to accomplish this year. We just need to keep putting in the work and never settle for anything.”
