Northwest Tennis Loses Home Opener Matches to Jones and Wallace State

Senatobia, Miss. — Northwest Community College’s men’s and women’s tennis teams dropped their season-opening home matches against Jones College and Wallace State. The teams faced tough competition, with the Bobcats of Jones College winning 9-0 in both matches, according to sources.

In Saturday’s match against Wallace State, the Rangers also lost but showed improvement. Head coach Ryan Mounce said the team competed hard and made progress despite the losses. “We just competed. There were spots where we didn’t necessarily execute, but we did what we were trying to do,” Mounce said. “I can live with that because you have got to put yourself in those positions, and unfortunately, when you’re learning something, you’re going to screw it up a couple of times.”

One of the weekend’s highlights was a pair of women’s victories. Freshman Brooke Kicker and Ryleigh Parker Weatherly earned a 9-7 doubles win against Wallace State. Kicker also secured a singles victory, defeating her opponent 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. Mounce praised Kicker’s effort, describing her as a relentless competitor.

Jones College dominated the early matchups, with the Bobcats winning all doubles and singles contests. Notable results included wins by Heidi Clayton, Camilia Piquín, and Maria Martinez in singles, and the team of Heidi Clayton and Theresa Emelio in doubles.

In the Wallace State matches, the Rangers’ doubles team of Kicker and Weatherly pulled out a 9-7 victory. Kicker also won her singles match in three sets. Wallace State’s players, including Madison Standifer and Jaedyn Martin, posted wins in singles and doubles, giving their team the edge overall.

Coach Mounce emphasized the importance of the early-season experiences. “It’s a process, and we’re learning every match,” he said. “Our players are gaining valuable experience, and I believe we will improve as the season progresses.”
