Northwest Mississippi Tennis Teams Bounce Back with Conference Wins
The Northwest Mississippi Community College men’s and women’s tennis teams rebounded from tough losses last week with dominant wins over Holmes and Southwest Mississippi Community College, according to school officials.
Both teams swept Holmes in 9-0 matches, losing only two games across 18 matches. The women’s team then defeated Southwest 5-4, while the men’s team secured an 8-1 victory over Southwest. Both wins featured ranked opponents, with the women beating No. 25 Southwest and the men defeating No. 23 Southwest, coaches said.
Head coach Ryan Mounce praised the team’s performance. “We just competed how we’re supposed to,” he said. “We went out to handle business the way it’s supposed to be done, so I’m happy with that.”
Looking ahead, the teams plan to maintain momentum during a busy week that includes four matches, with upcoming contests against Meridian and East Central, Mounce added. “Everyone’s playing well; we just have to keep working hard and practicing hard,” he said. “Good things will happen.”
Details of recent matches include doubles and singles results. In the women’s doubles against Holmes, Claudia Lopez Chaparro and Laura Cámara Blanco defeated their opponents 8-0. In singles, Ángela Ortiz-Sánchez and Claudia Lopez Chaparro both won without dropping a game. The men’s team also dominated Holmes in doubles, with Carlos Diaz Sanchez and Luca Morris winning 8-0, and swept singles matches with five players winning 6-0, 6-0.
Against Southwest, the women’s doubles team of Lopez Chaparro and Blanco narrowly defeated their opponents 9-7. In singles, Lopez Chaparro and Cámara Blanco secured wins, while Southwest’s Marina Morales Troncoso handed the women’s team their only loss. The men’s doubles team of Diaz Sanchez and Morris won 8-6, and the men’s singles saw strong performances from Morris and others, despite a loss for Juan Cividini of Southwest.
Players mentioned include sophomore Meg Daves, freshman Ava McCain, and sophomore Luca Morris, among others. Coaches emphasized the team’s effort and focus moving forward.
