The Northwest Mississippi Community College men’s soccer team secured its largest victory in program history Tuesday afternoon with an 11-1 win over Blue Mountain Christian University JV at Ranger Soccer Field, according to school officials.
Head coach Windham Whatley credited the team’s finishing ability for the dominant performance. “We finished chances, and that’s one thing we talked about,” Whatley said. “Those two losses we dropped earlier were just missing chances. Today, almost every chance we got in front of goal we put away. That’s positive to see.”
Northwest opened the scoring in the fourth minute when Joseph Jackson scored from 16 yards after a pass from Osvaldo Macias. Jackson added a second goal less than three minutes later, assisted by Bolu Owoyemi, putting the team ahead 2-0. Blue Mountain responded in the 20th minute with a goal to close the gap to 2-1.
The Rangers regained momentum before halftime, with Owoyemi scoring his first goal in the 34th minute on an assist from Auden Sammons, and Nile Hunt scoring in the 41st minute on a rebound, giving Northwest a 4-1 lead at halftime.
The team continued its scoring surge in the second half, starting with Owoyemi’s second goal in the 51st minute, assisted by Jackson. Giovani Salinas scored his first goal of the season in the 57th minute, and Tristan Davis added his first collegiate goal in the 58th minute. Hunt then scored twice in quick succession in the 59th and 60th minutes, completing his first career hat trick and pushing the score to 9-1.
Jackson and Owoyemi added two more goals in the 67th and 68th minutes, respectively, bringing the final score to 11-1. The team also tallied 10 assists, demonstrating their ability to move the ball effectively and create scoring opportunities.
“After games and watching film, coach has been drilling it into our heads to get it into the box because we have great strikers,” Hunt said. “We just have to give them a chance.”
The victory marks the largest margin of victory and most goals scored in a game in program history, ending a two-match losing streak.
