No. 6 Auburn Montgomery Sweeps Delta State Softball Doubleheader

Montgomery, Alabama — The Delta State University softball team dropped both ends of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader to No. 6 Auburn Montgomery on Friday at the AUM Softball Complex. The Warhawks won 4-0 in the first game and 7-1 in the second.

In the opener, AUM’s Reese Cauley pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out eight and limiting Delta State to three hits. The Lady Statesmen threatened early when Mary Teague doubled to lead off the game, but the team failed to capitalize. Cauley’s offense responded quickly, with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the first to give AUM a 2-0 lead. The Warhawks added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to extend the lead to four.

Maeve Lavoy pitched for Delta State, allowing four runs on nine hits over seven innings. She struck out three batters but was unable to prevent the sweep.

The second game saw Auburn Montgomery take an early 3-0 lead, scoring twice in the first and once in the third. The Warhawks broke the game open with a four-run fifth inning, drawing nine walks in the process. Delta State scored its only run in the fifth on a Warhawk error, cutting the deficit to 3-1. However, AUM responded immediately with its own four-run inning to secure the victory.

Delta State was limited to two hits in the second game, with Maeve Lavoy and Rebecca Martinez each contributing one. Kendal Moore took the loss, allowing five runs over four innings, while Grace Pippin pitched two innings of relief.

The Lady Statesmen fell to 12-31 overall and 6-19 in Gulf South Conference play. They will look to rebound as the series concludes Saturday at 12 p.m. (CT).
