Mississippi Valley State Softball Falls Short in Seventh-Inning Rally Against Grambling

Montgomery, Alabama — Mississippi Valley State University’s softball team lost 5-4 to Grambling State in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday at Lagoon Park. The Devilettes trailed by one in the bottom of the seventh with a runner on first and one out but were unable to complete the rally after a double play ended their chances.

In the first game, Alcorn State routed Mississippi Valley 22-5 in five innings. The Devilettes, now 0-6 overall, are seeking their first win of the season. Alcorn improved to 5-4, while Grambling State moved to 4-6.

During the second game, Mississippi Valley’s Sheridan Kynard went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, and two runs scored. Kynard also drove in a run and reached base in every plate appearance. Kelsey Kaluna-Thomas drew a walk, scored once, and hit a two-run single in the first inning to give the Devilettes an early lead.

In the circle, Ashytn Clark pitched a complete game for Mississippi Valley, striking out five and allowing two earned runs. Offensively, Michelle Diaz went 3-for-3 with an RBI, a stolen base, and a run scored. Hailey Akers and Taniya Partee also contributed key hits, with Partee driving in the potential tying run in the seventh.

The Devilettes face a quick turnaround with games against Miles College and Bluefield State scheduled for Saturday at Lagoon Park. Mississippi Valley State is striving for its first win of the season.
