Mississippi Valley Falls Short in Close Defensive Battle Against Alcorn
LOMAN, Miss. — Mississippi Valley State University’s men’s basketball team came close to forcing overtime but missed a game-tying three-pointer in the final seconds of their contest against Alcorn State. The Braves edged the Delta Devils 67-64 at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
Alcorn State leads the all-time series 82-38 and extended its winning streak to 14 games. Mississippi Valley, with a record of 3-28 overall and 2-15 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, last defeated the Braves on Feb. 16, 2019.
Daniel Mayfield led Mississippi Valley with 18 points and 10 rebounds, marking his sixth double-double of the season. He also recorded two blocks. Michael James scored 14 points, his second-lowest in SWAC play, but contributed a season-high seven assists. Mussa Mzein added 11 points in 17 minutes off the bench, shooting 4-for-6 from the field and perfect from the free-throw line.
Xzayvion Childress had five points and four assists, while Patrick Punch scored seven points and grabbed three rebounds. Despite a strong effort, the Delta Devils could not convert in the closing seconds, as a heave at the buzzer rolled out.
