Mississippi State tops Ole Miss 6-1, completes singles sweep
STARKVILLE, Miss. — No. 6 Mississippi State extended its winning streak at home Friday, defeating No. 27 Ole Miss 6-1 at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre, according to athletic department officials.
Ole Miss took the early lead in doubles, with Matthieu Chambonniere and Benjamin Martin earning a 6-3 win. However, the Bulldogs responded on court two, where Mario Martinez Serrano and Michal Novansky won 6-2 to even the doubles score. Ole Miss clinched the point on court one with a 7-6 (4) tiebreak victory by Kai Milburn and Isac Stromberg over the No. 4-ranked Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez.
Mississippi State dominated in singles, winning all six matches. Bryan Hernandez Cortes opened with a 6-2, 6-2 victory on court six. Jovanovic followed with a 6-4, 6-4 win on court two, and Mario Martinez Serrano secured a 6-4, 6-2 win on court four to put the Bulldogs ahead 3-1.
Raphael Vaksmann clinched the match for Mississippi State with a 6-3, 6-4 victory on court five. The Bulldogs added to their score with Benito Sanchez Martinez earning a 6-2, 6-4 win on court one and Niccolo Baroni rallying for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 win on court three. The win marked the Bulldogs’ eighth ranked conference victory of the season.
Mississippi State improved to 17-3 overall and 8-2 in SEC play, while Ole Miss fell to 15-6 and 3-6 in conference. The Bulldogs also achieved back-to-back 6-1 victories over ranked opponents, with five players earning straight-set or tiebreak wins in singles.
The team will host Kentucky on Sunday at noon CT. The upcoming match will be available via live stats and streaming, according to the athletic department.
