Mississippi State RB Fluff Bothwell Aims for Full Return in 2026 Season
STARKVILLE, Miss. — Mississippi State running back Fluff Bothwell says he is hungry for success ahead of the 2026 football season. Bothwell, an avid dog lover, joked that his canines have insatiable appetites but that he is even hungrier than his pets, who depend on him for food, according to a statement from the player.
Bothwell is optimistic about the upcoming campaign. He believes the Bulldogs have a strong shot at success with a talented roster that includes quarterback Kamario Taylor. Taylor highlighted Bothwell’s impact, saying, “No opponent wants to see him. With Fluff 100% healthy, we’ll be a scary team because we can run and pass the ball.”
Last season, Bothwell ranked fourth in the SEC in rushing yards and touchdowns before suffering an injury against Texas A&M in Week 6. Prior to the injury, he averaged 5.8 yards per carry and had a career-high 134 yards against Tennessee in his first start of the season. His transfer from South Alabama to Mississippi State in 2025 gave him confidence he could compete at this level, he said.
Injury setbacks hampered his 2025 season, forcing him to miss two games and delaying his return to full strength. Despite the hurdles, Bothwell made notable plays, including a 39-yard reception at Arkansas and a 43-yard run against Ole Miss. He expressed excitement about being fully healthy for 2026 and aims to stay that way throughout the season.
Offseason efforts have focused on development, including improving pass blocking and catching skills. Bothwell emphasized his dedication to extra film study and treatment, along with fulfilling what his coach, Jeff Lebby, expects from him. He described the team as collectively hungry, quoting running backs coach Anthony Tucker, “Are you hungry, or are you starving?”
As Mississippi State prepares for the season, Bothwell and the Bulldogs are eager to start, with his goal being to deliver a complete, impactful season. His focus remains on growth and contribution to the team’s success in 2026.
