Mississippi State Comes Up Short Against No. 5 Vanderbilt

Mississippi State’s women’s basketball team nearly pulled off an upset against No. 5 Vanderbilt on Thursday, but fell 89-84 at Humphrey Coliseum in Starkville. The Bulldogs trailed by as many as 14 points but mounted a late rally, ultimately falling short.

Mississippi State outscored Vanderbilt in the paint for the first time in 15 games, finishing with a 42-32 advantage in that category. Five Bulldogs scored in double figures, led by Madison Francis with 15 points and eight rebounds. It was the sixth time this season she led the team in scoring.

Favour Nwaedozi added 14 points and six rebounds in 20 minutes, despite battling foul trouble. Saniyah King scored a season-high 13 points, marking her first double-figure performance of the year. Kharyssa Richardson also scored 13 points, and Chandler Prater contributed 10 points and two steals. Trayanna Crisp dished out seven assists, matching her career high, and added three steals and two three-pointers in her eight-point effort.

The Bulldogs face a tough stretch, with their next game against seventh-ranked Kentucky on Sunday, Jan. 18. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. on SECN+.
