Mississippi College softball shuts out Union 5-0 in decisive victory
CLINTON, Miss. — Mississippi College’s softball team earned a 5-0 win over Union University on Friday night at the MC Softball Complex. The Choctaws improved to 10-7-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play, while Union dropped to 5-10 and 2-2 in league action.
Mississippi College’s offense was led by two home runs and a total of eight hits, while pitcher Cam Bailey threw a complete game shutout. Bailey allowed five hits, struck out two batters, and issued no walks over seven innings. His performance marked his seventh win of the season, boosting his record to 7-3.
MC scored early in the first inning after an error allowed Lydia Bethards to score following a double by Mary Lem. The team extended its lead in the second inning, with Shelby Samples hitting a home run for the third run. Hadley Lemons contributed with a walk and a steal, setting the stage for Blakely Gill’s sacrifice fly RBI.
The sixth inning saw further offensive action. Lem doubled to center field, and Kallee Nichols, pinch running, scored on a wild pitch. Madelyn England then homered, adding the fifth run for the Choctaws. The team maintained its shutout through the seventh inning to secure the victory.
Leading hitters included Lem, who went 2-for-2 with two doubles and an RBI. England and Sarah Lee each homered, with Lee also collecting two hits and one RBI. England also provided five assists in the field.
The teams are scheduled to continue their series with games two and three on Saturday, beginning at 12 p.m.
