Mississippi College Sets Multiple School Records at UAB Blazer Invitational
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Mississippi College’s track and field teams made a notable showing Saturday at the UAB Blazer Invite, setting multiple school records and achieving NCAA provisional marks amid a competitive field, according to school officials.
The men’s team excelled in the triple jump and weight throw, with freshman Schyler Chambers recording a personal-best and school-record jump of 15.14 meters (49 feet, 8 inches), placing second overall. His jump ranks 11th nationally in NCAA Division II and leads the Gulf South Conference.
In the throws, senior James David Miller set a new Mississippi College record in the weight throw with a personal-best 18.52 meters (60 feet, 9 inches), finishing third. On the track, junior Jake McMillan posted an NCAA provisional mark of 8.13 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles preliminaries, finishing third in the finals with a time of 8.10 seconds. McMillan also cleared 1.99 meters (6 feet, 6¼ inches) in the high jump, ranking fourth in the GSC and fifth all-time at the school.
The men’s 4×400-meter relay team of Vasquez, the Hodson brothers, and Wrights finished second with a time of 3:14.19, marking first in the GSC and 14th nationally. Other top men’s performances included Bryan Puckett’s fourth-place shot put of 15.96 meters (52 feet, 4½ inches) and Christian Balcer’s second-place mile run in 4:18.46.
On the women’s side, Taylor Benoit won the 3,000 meters in 9:58.13, ranking third in the GSC. Anna Tucker improved her 400-meter best to 58.84 seconds, tying for fourth in the conference and ranking sixth at Mississippi College. Sprinter Alana Green clocked a season-best 7.68 seconds in the 60-meter dash, tying for second in the GSC, and anchored the 4×400 relay team that ran 3:56.32 — the second-fastest in program history.
Other notable performances included Madison Flugence’s personal-best long jump of 5.46 meters (17 feet, 11 inches), and Kinley Harris’s personal best of 10:25.24 in the 3,000 meters. Haylei Mason’s 25.92 seconds in the 200 meters was a personal best, ranking sixth all-time at the school. In field events, Mallory Dial cleared 1.63 meters (5 feet, 4¼ inches) in the high jump, and Kennedy Thompson threw the weight 16.85 meters (55 feet, 3½ inches).
Mississippi College plans to send a smaller group to Vanderbilt next week to compete mainly in distance events before focusing on the Gulf South Conference Indoor Championships in two weeks, officials said.
