Mississippi College rallies to beat William Carey 8-6

CLINTON, Miss. — Mississippi College rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat William Carey University 8-6 on Tuesday at Frierson Field.

William Carey took an early lead. Hays Carley singled and later scored on an RBI groundout by Alan McClean in the second inning, giving the Crusaders a 1-0 advantage. In the fourth, Cam Senior doubled and brought home Carley to extend the lead to 2-0.

The Choctaws responded quickly. Will Langston doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly from Jake LaRocca, tying the game at 2-2. Trent Murphy added an RBI single later in the inning to even the score.

Mississippi College took the lead in the sixth inning. An infield single by McClean drove in a run, and after Tyler Ducksworth was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Gage Hinnant singled twice, pushing the score to 5-2.

The Crusaders staged a comeback in the bottom of the sixth. LaRocca’s double and a single from Kade Jordan cut the deficit to 5-4. Murphy then grounded out to tie the game, and Cole Gadman hit a single to put Mississippi College ahead 6-5.

William Carey fought back in the seventh. Jayden Mark doubled and scored on a fielder’s choice, narrowly beating the tag from LaRocca to tie the game at 6-6. However, the Choctaws scored twice in the bottom of the inning. Murphy singled, bringing in two runs to give Mississippi College an 8-6 lead.

From there, the Choctaw bullpen shut down William Carey, retiring the Crusaders in order in both the eighth and ninth innings to secure the victory.

William Carey returns to action Thursday, Feb. 12, hosting Missouri Baptist at Milton Wheeler Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m., according to team officials.
