Millsaps Women’s Basketball Falls to Berry, 76-72, in SAA Battle
MOUNT BERRY, Ga. — The Millsaps College women’s basketball team lost to Berry College 76-72 in a close contest Friday night at the Cage Center. Millsaps (12-6, 3-4 SAA) led 16 times and tied the game eight times but couldn’t hold off the Vikings in the final minutes.
Senior Elyse Warren posted a double-double with 18 points and 21 rebounds, making all six field goals. Junior Bailey Johnson scored 14 points, including four 3-pointers, and added four steals. Junior Tia Anderson finished with 12 points, four rebounds, two assists, and a block. Classmate Garin Freeman contributed nine assists and four steals before fouling out. Sophomore Ashlyn Hafley scored eight points on two perfect 3-pointers.
The game started with both teams showing resilience. Berry took an early 5-0 lead, but Millsaps responded with a three from Johnson and a jumper from Anderson to tie the game at 7-7. The Majors took their first lead after Johnson’s three and maintained momentum into the second quarter. Warren’s plays helped extend the lead to 23-14 before Berry responded with key three-pointers of its own.
By halftime, Millsaps led 31-28. The third quarter saw a back-and-forth, with Johnson’s three-pointer and Warren’s layup helping the Majors build a seven-point lead. Berry fought back, tying the game at 43-43 with a three-pointer and eventually taking its first lead since the first quarter. Richardson’s late layup kept Millsaps ahead 55-54 heading into the fourth.
In the final quarter, Millsaps pushed to maintain its lead. Anderson’s three extended the advantage to 58-54, but turnovers allowed Berry to regain control. Warren’s layup at 2:09 brought Millsaps within three, but the Vikings held on to win 76-72.
