Millsaps Women’s Basketball Beats Oglethorpe 94-79 with Strong Shooting

The Millsaps women’s basketball team defeated Oglethorpe University 94-79 in a conference game Sunday at the Dorough Field House.

The Majors (13-6, 4-4 Southern Athletic Association) dominated inside the paint with 44 points and shot 73.5% from the free-throw line, converting 25 of 34 attempts. Junior Garin Freeman scored a career-high 28 points, making 9 of 14 field goals and 8 of 12 free throws. She also dished out five assists.

Senior Elyse Warren posted a double-double with 16 points and 17 rebounds, shooting 4 of 6 from the free-throw line. Junior Tia Anderson added 21 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks, while sophomore Anaya Lewis contributed 10 points and nine rebounds, going perfect from the free-throw line. Junior Bailey Johnson scored 10 points and added three assists in the win.

The game opened with Johnson hitting a 3-pointer assisted by Freeman at 7:36. Freeman then put the Majors ahead 5-2 with two free throws. Oglethorpe responded with a 7-0 run, leading 9-5, but Millsaps regained momentum before halftime. Warren’s layup with 1:23 remaining gave the visitors an 11-point lead at 45-34, and Freeman’s turnaround jumper closed the half at 47-38.

In the third quarter, Millsaps outshot Oglethorpe 56% to 31%, capitalizing on turnovers and bench contributions. Freeman’s three-pointer extended the lead, and Anderson’s layup pushed the margin to 25 points. The Majors continued to control the game, maintaining their lead through the fourth quarter and finishing with a 94-79 victory.
