Millsaps Football Posts First Winning Season Since 2013 Under Coach Brandon Lechtenberg
The Millsaps College football team secured its first winning season since 2013 with a 6-4 record in 2025, after beating Sewanee on Saturday, according to school officials.
Brandon Lechtenberg, in his second year as head coach, was hired in January 2024. He previously served as the program’s defensive coordinator from 2011 to 2016, helping lead the team to conference championships in 2012 and 2013. Since returning as head coach, Lechtenberg’s teams have improved from a 5-5 record in 2024 to this year’s mark.
Lechtenberg credited the team’s progress to collective effort. “We’re definitely trending in the direction we want to go and pushing in the direction we want to go,” he said Tuesday. “This year’s team stepped up. It was a collective.”
The turnaround includes notable victories, such as an upset over Maryville on Oct. 18 — the program’s first win over a top-10 and a ranked opponent since 2009. Millsaps forced three season-high interceptions from Maryville quarterback Bryson Rollins and received nearly 400 yards from freshman quarterback Grant Bizjack in a 31-21 win at home.
Lechtenberg said the victory was a significant milestone for the program. “That was an awesome feeling for the team and the program,” he said. “The alumni who were here for that game brought a lot of excitement.”
While pleased with the 2025 season, Lechtenberg acknowledged missed opportunities that could have led to more wins. He also noted that the team statistically closed the gap with top conference opponents, finishing fourth in the Southern Athletic Association for the second straight year.
Lechtenberg explained that Millsaps improved its record against top teams from 0-3 last year to 1-2 this season. The team also dominated bottom-tier opponents, winning those games by over 40 points compared to just seven points in 2024.
The coach expressed optimism about future growth, crediting seniors for laying a strong foundation. “We have a great core of players coming back,” he said. “We need to recruit and keep adding talent. I’m excited to continue moving the program forward.”
Lechtenberg emphasized the importance of collaboration among players, coaches, administrators, and alumni in achieving ongoing success. “We feel like we have a good springboard for the future,” he said. “I am grateful for the seniors who built this foundation and look forward to what’s next.”
