Memphis Sweeps Jackson State in Softball Doubleheader
Memphis softball team swept Jackson State in a doubleheader Wednesday, winning 8-5 and 17-6. In the first game, Jackson State’s offense was led by Mackenzie Barney, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Gabrielle Willis added an RBI and a walk, while Sommer Tyes contributed a hit, a walk, and an RBI.
Jackson State took an early lead in game one, scoring four runs in the fourth inning to go ahead 4-1. Memphis responded with four runs of their own, taking a 5-4 lead. Jackson State tied the game with an RBI single from Willis in the fifth, but Memphis scored three runs in the final two innings to secure the win, 8-5.
Jackson State’s pitcher Jorgina Gant took the loss, facing 35 Memphis hitters and recording three strikeouts. Memphis was led offensively by Faith Brown, who went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Memphis pitcher Avery Stutts threw three shutout innings to earn the win.
In the second game, Memphis dominated, winning 17-6. Jackson State’s Brooklyn Morris started and took the loss. Jackson State’s offense was fueled by Jhordan Dyer, who went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI, and Sommer Tyes, who was 1-for-1 with two RBIs. Jackson State scored four runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Tyes.
Memphis’s Jasmine Mack led the way offensively in game two, going 3-for-4 with a triple, a home run, and three RBIs. Jackson State’s pitchers faced 35 Memphis hitters, allowing six ground balls, five fly balls, and striking out two. The Tigers will open a series against Mississippi Valley State on Friday at 5 p.m.
