Mayfield, James Score 30+ Points as Jackson State Beats Mississippi Valley State
ITTA BENA, Miss. — Jackson State’s offense outlasted Mississippi Valley State in a 97-81 men’s basketball game Saturday at the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex. Both teams featured players scoring over 30 points, but the Tigers secured the win.
Michael James led all players with 32 points on 11-of-25 shooting, including four three-pointers. He also set a season high with four steals and dished out four assists, according to game statistics. Daniel Mayfield scored a season-best 30 points on 12-of-20 shooting, adding a block in his best offensive performance of the year. X’Zaeviion Barnett played all 40 minutes, recording four steals, six assists, seven rebounds, and a blocked shot.
Mississippi Valley State, which fell to 1-22 overall and 0-9 in the SWAC, was led by Mayfield and Patrick Punch. Punch scored nine points off the bench. The Delta Devils have lost six straight games to Jackson State, with their last win coming on Feb. 4, 2023.
Jackson State improved to 7-16 overall and 6-4 in the SWAC. The Tigers hold a 50-44 series lead over Mississippi Valley State since 1983-84. The teams will resume action Monday evening when Mississippi Valley hosts Alcorn State at 7 p.m.
