Marshall beats Southern Miss 81-77 despite Binet’s 31 points

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Djahi Binet scored a career-high 31 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, but Southern Miss fell to Marshall 81-77 Wednesday night inside the Cam Henderson Center.

Binet was perfect at the free-throw line, going 12-for-12, and scored his second 20-point game of the season. The Golden Eagles also made 10 three-pointers, their third game with double figures in that category this season.

Southern Miss started strong, with Izzy Hart hitting back-to-back three-pointers to give the team an early 8-2 lead. The Golden Eagles led by as many as six points in the first half and took a 38-34 advantage into halftime. Binet scored the final points of the half with two free throws.

Marshall rallied in the second half, tying the game at 46 and then taking the lead with a 6-0 run. The Herd extended the lead to as many as 10 points before Southern Miss made a late push. Brewer Carruth’s three-pointer cut the deficit to one with four seconds remaining, but Marshall sealed the win with three free throws.

The Golden Eagles shot 41.1% for the game and 45.5% in the second half, but struggled with their shooting at times. They finished 21-for-30 at the free-throw line. Marshall shot 53.7% from the field and 34.8% from three-point range.

Southern Miss, now 12-13 overall and 6-7 in Sun Belt play, will host Kent State on Saturday in the MAC-SBC Challenge. The game is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Reed Green Coliseum, available via ESPN+.
