Malachi Morgan Earns All-Region Honors in Indoor Track and Field
NEW ORLEANS — Malachi Morgan, a freshman from Austin High School in Decatur, Alabama, has been named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s All-Region team for NCAA Division III indoor track and field, the organization announced Wednesday.
Morgan is the first male student-athlete from the Owls to earn All-Region recognition. The top eight individuals in each event from each region on the year-end Descending Order Lists received the honor, along with the top eight relay teams in each region. The regions match those used during the cross country season, including East, Great Lakes, Metro, Mid-Atlantic, Mideast, Midwest, Niagara, North, South and West.
He made the list in the high jump after recording a season-best indoor mark of 1.99 meters (6 feet 6.25 inches) at the UAB Invitational at Birmingham CrossPlex on Feb. 7. The mark set a school record in the event.
In addition to his high jump, Morgan won the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference indoor championship in the high jump and also claimed the conference title in the long jump, where he holds the Owls’ school record. He was named both the SLIAC Freshman Field Events Performer of the Year and the overall Field Events Performer of the Year, according to the school.
“This is a great accomplishment for Malachi and for the men’s program,” said Dedrick Burnett, head coach of the Owls. “He’s been working hard and dealing with some minor injuries this indoor season, so for him to achieve this honor is a well-deserved reward. As we turn our attention to the outdoor season, we’re preparing him to possibly qualify for the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championship Meet.”
