Lady Statesmen Fall to Valdosta State in Series Finale

Valdosta, Ga. — The Delta State University softball team lost the series finale to Valdosta State 12-1 in five innings Sunday afternoon in Gulf South Conference play. Valdosta State (13-11, 8-4 GSC) finished with 11 hits and four home runs, earning the run-rule victory.

Delta State (8-17, 4-8 GSC) managed four hits. Carly Dunigan hit the team’s only home run, a solo shot in the fourth inning. The Lady Blazers scored first, plating three runs in the second inning on two doubles and a wild pitch to take an early 3-0 lead.

Valdosta State added three more runs in the third inning on back-to-back home runs by Madison VanAllen and Rachel Lee, extending the lead to 6-0. Delta State responded in the top of the fourth with Dunigan’s solo home run, making it 6-1. However, the Blazers responded with a six-run bottom half of the inning, including two more home runs and RBI hits, to finalize the score at 12-1.

Dunigan led Delta State offensively with a 1-for-2 performance and the team’s only RBI. Ally Agner, Hallie Turner, and Calli McConnell each added hits. Maeve Lavoy (4-3) took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits over 2.2 innings while striking out three. Relief pitchers Averi Bridgman and Kendal Moore also saw action.

Madison VanAllen earned the win for Valdosta State, tossing five innings, allowing one run on four hits and striking out four. Delta State will host LeMoyne-Owen on Wednesday at University Field as they look to rebound.
