Jones College Tennis Sweeps North Mississippi Weekend Matches

NEW ALBANY — Jones College’s tennis team posted two decisive wins over the weekend, starting the MACCC season with a 4-0 record. The Bobcats defeated No. 17 Northwest 9-0 on Friday and beat Rust College 7-0 on Saturday.

Jones opened with a strong doubles performance against Northwest, winning all three matches. Tom Garrett of Australia and Juan Francisco Pereyra of Argentina defeated Luca Morris and Carlos Diaz Sanchez 8-4 in No. 1 doubles. Ridge Jones of Northeast Jones and Felipe Morales of Ecuador topped Holden Cooke and Jordan Mitchell 8-3 in No. 2 doubles. Ryan Roth of Resurrection Catholic and Luke Westmoreland of Grenada secured the No. 3 doubles point with an 8-3 win over Brady Holliman and Miguel Lazaga Robayna.

In singles play, Garrett defeated Sanchez 6-0, 6-2, and Pereyra beat Morris 6-2, 6-2. Morales downed Robayna 6-1, 6-1, and Jones won against Cooke 6-3, 6-2. Westmoreland topped Mitchell 6-1, 6-2, and Roth edged Holliman 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-3).

Against Rust College, Jones opened with a clean sweep in doubles, with Garrett and Pereyra defeating Jerry Rido and Aldo Noudogbessi 6-0, and Jones and Morales shutting out Joshua Johnson and Jean-Jacques Agbo 6-0. Roth and Westmoreland also won their doubles match 6-1.

In singles, Morales blanked Agbo 6-0, 6-0, while Jones defeated Ali-Kparah 6-3, 6-1. Westmoreland beat Noudogbessi 6-3, 6-0, and Roth defeated Auguste 6-0, 6-4. Crews Cockrell of West Jones topped Johnson 6-0, 2-6, 1-0 (10-4), and Nicholas Marengo from Forrest County AHS won 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 over Pena Rodriguez.

Jones returns home Tuesday for a conference match against Southwest at 2 p.m., according to athletic officials.
