Jones College men’s tennis team wins two matches against NCAA Division III opponents
JACKSON — The No. 13 Jones College men’s tennis team defeated NCAA Division III foes Belhaven and Millsaps by 7-0 scores Friday. The Bobcats are now 10-0 overall and are set to host No. 12 Mississippi Gulf Coast at 2 p.m. Tuesday in a key MACCC match.
In the morning match at Parham Bridges, Jones opened with a sweep of Belhaven. Juan Francisco Pereyra of Argentina and Ridge Jones from Northeast Jones won the No. 1 doubles match, 6-2, over Josiah Leggett and Briley Oakes. Felipe Morales of Ecuador and Reese Touchet from Madison Central blanked Mark Breedlove and Paul Stager in No. 2 doubles, 6-0. Ryan Roth of Resurrection Catholic and Luke Westmoreland of Grenada defeated John Madden and Bernard Jackson, 6-2, in No. 3 doubles.
Pereyra defeated Leggett in singles, 6-0, 6-1. Morales beat Oakes, 6-1, 6-1. Madden was downed by Jones, 6-1, 6-1. Westmoreland topped Breedlove, 6-4, 6-2. Roth defeated Stager, 6-1, 6-1, and Crews Cockrell of West Jones won his singles match over Jackson, 6-2, 6-2.
Later Friday at Millsaps College, Jones claimed the doubles point to start the match. Tom Garrett of Australia and Pereyra beat Anderson Causey and Bradley Schiaffino, 6-2. Morales and Touchet fell 5-7 to Sam Tuli and Cooper Payne. Jones and Roth shut out Brennan Pierce and Sebastian Gonzalez, 6-0.
In singles, Pereyra defeated Causey, 6-1, 6-2. Garrett downed Jon Titan Nguyen, 6-1, 6-1. Morales topped Tuli, 7-5, 4-6, 10-3, and Jones beat Schiaffino, 6-1, 6-1. Westmoreland defeated Payne, 6-2, 6-4, and Roth won against Gonzalez, 6-0, 6-1. In an additional match, Cockrell defeated Pierce, 8-4.
