Jackson State Wins Second Day at MLB HBCU Power Series with 6-1 Victory

Jackson State bounced back Saturday night at Trustmark Park with a 6-1 win over Alabama A&M in the MLB HBCU Power Series. Starting pitcher Derek Arrocha earned his first career start and pitched more than six innings, allowing three hits and striking out nine, according to the school.

Arrocha exited in the seventh inning with the bases loaded. Manuel Toro faced the first batter and hit him to bring in Alabama A&M’s only run. Toro then induced a double play and a diving stop by Robert Tate Jr. to end the inning with Jackson State ahead 5-1.

Jackson State scored early, taking a 2-0 lead in the second inning. An RBI double from Ledy Alvarez highlighted the inning. The Tigers added three more runs in the fifth, benefitting from six walks and two Bulldogs errors. Alvarez led all players at the plate with a 2-for-2 performance, including an RBI and a run scored.

The Tigers increased their lead in the eighth inning when Troy Wilson Jr. singled to center, driving in Pierre Cabral. Wilson also recorded his first collegiate hit and stole his first career base in the game.

Jackson State (1-1) is set to face Alcorn State on Sunday at 6 p.m. to conclude the series, according to the school. Follow Jackson State Athletics for updates via social media at @GoJSUTigers on Instagram and Twitter and on Facebook.
