Jackson State Track and Field Heads to SWAC Indoor Championships
Jackson State University will send its men’s and women’s track and field teams to compete at the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Indoor Championship on February 21-22 at the Birmingham CrossPlex, according to university sources.
Last year, the Tigers finished second in the men’s team standings, narrowly trailing Texas Southern, and placed ninth among women. Several athletes who medaled last year are returning to compete this season, including Dominic Turner, Robert Salhab III and Godfrey Kimutai.
Jackson State claimed seven medals in the 2022 championship, winning four golds. Throughout the season, the team has posted victories in seven events, such as the women’s 800 meters by Kaylin Jackson, women’s shot put by Malayna Mallory, women’s triple jump by Nedgine Morancy, and men’s 60-meter hurdles by Rickey Green III. Other winners include Dalon Harris and Kaiden Berry in men’s shot put, and Sedgwrick Pitts Jr. in the men’s 200 meters.
Team members include Pitts, a freshman competing in the 60, 100 and 200 meters; Harris, a senior shot putter standing 6 feet 2 inches; Salhab, a senior shot putter at 6 feet 4 inches; Turner, a graduate student distance runner at 6 feet 4 inches; Green, a freshman hurdler at 6 feet 1 inch; Kimutai, a sophomore distance runner at 5 feet 7 inches; Jackson, a junior distance athlete at 5 feet 3 inches; Mallory, a freshman thrower at 5 feet 10 inches; Berry, a senior thrower at 6 feet; and Morancy, a junior jumper.
