Jackson State Softball Wins One, Loses Two at Eagle Hub City Classic
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Jackson State’s softball team posted a 1-2 record at the Eagle Hub City Classic over the weekend, defeating Morehead State 2-1 on Friday before losing to Lamar and Chattanooga on Saturday.
In the opener, Jorgina Gant earned the win, throwing seven innings and allowing one run on five hits. She struck out three and walked none. Offensively, Ka’Liyah Gipson led the Tigers with a 2-for-4 effort and an RBI, helping Jackson State jump to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning.
Jackson State scored again in the fifth, with Zaria Keyes crossing home plate to make it 2-1. The Tigers maintained their lead through the rest of the game, holding on for the victory. Jackson State out-hit Morehead State 6-5, with Keyes stealing two bases. The Tigers also went 3-for-9 with runners in scoring position, according to game statistics.
The following day, Jackson State was shut out 12-0 by Lamar. B. Morris took the loss in the circle, while Meah Almaraz led the Tigers offensively with a 2-for-3 performance, including a double. Despite having two opportunities with runners on third, the Tigers managed only one hit in 7 at-bats with runners in scoring position.
Later Saturday, Jackson State was also shut out 8-0 by Chattanooga. J. Rutledge started and took the loss, with Beija Allen leading offensively by going 1-for-2. The Tigers did not advance a runner past second base in the game and finished the tournament with a 1-2 record for the weekend.
