Jackson State rallies to beat Texas Southern 17-12 in SWAC game

Jackson State erased a five-run deficit in the eighth and ninth innings to defeat Texas Southern 17-12 in a Southwestern Athletic Conference game Sunday at MacGregor Field.

The Tigers (10-11, 1-2 SWAC) trailed 12-7 after seven innings but scored 10 runs over the final two frames. They tallied five runs in the eighth, including a two-run home run by Tyshon Patty and a solo shot by Tyree Reed. In the ninth, Robert Tate Jr. tripled to drive in two runs, followed by a bunt single from Reed and a two-run homer by Pierre Cabral to seal the victory.

Jackson State finished with 16 hits, with Tate and Patty each homering twice. Tate went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and four runs scored, while Cabral was 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs. Patty was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and three runs, and Reed went 2-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Payton Boines contributed two hits in four at-bats.

Kevin De Los Santos (2-1) earned the win in relief, working 1.1 scoreless innings. Kade Walker pitched the ninth, allowing one hit to close out the game.

Texas Southern took an early lead, scoring five runs in the first inning. Byron Robinson knocked in two runs with a single, and the Tigers added to their lead with a home run from Zachari Pace in the second. The Tigers extended their lead to 12-7 after scoring seven runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Chavez and Joubert.

Jackson State will face No. 3 Mississippi State on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in their final game of the road swing, broadcast on ESPN+.
