Jackson State Men Finish Second, Women Ninth at SWAC Indoor Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Jackson State concluded the second day of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Indoor Championships with the men’s team finishing in second place and the women in ninth, according to school officials.

The Tigers scored 97 points, trailing Texas Southern, which finished with 108 points. Jackson State earned medals through standout performances from Sedgwrick Pitts Jr. and Godfrey Kimutai. Pitts Jr. took silver in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.31 seconds, while Kimutai secured third place in the 1-mile race with a personal-best time of 4:20.75.

Kimutai’s time marked a personal record, and fellow athletes Eric Lagat and Collins Kibet also achieved personal bests in the mile, recording times of 4:26.54 and 4:27.52, respectively. Lagat also set a personal record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:27.68.

On the women’s side, Jackson State athletes posted multiple personal and season bests. Freshman Malayna Mallory, who broke the school record in the weight throw earlier in the meet, added a season-best in the shot put with a throw of 12.17 meters. Three jumpers — Kierstin Mumford, Ashanti Patton, and Jacquel Williams — each recorded season-best marks in the triple jump, with distances of 11.49 meters, 11.39 meters, and 11.30 meters, respectively.

In the 800-meter finals, Kaylin Jackson set a personal record with a time of 2:13.59. Amara Hawkins-Quinones finished with a season-best time of 2:15.21. Both athletes also contributed to Jackson State’s season-best performance in the 4×400-meter relay alongside Callie Calicut and Karina Griffin.

Jackson State’s athletics department highlighted the athletes’ achievements and encouraged fans to follow the Tigers on social media for more coverage. The championship results reflect a strong showing for the team heading into the postseason.
