Jackson State Falls to Texas Southern in SWAC Tournament Opener
Gulfport, Miss. — Jackson State’s softball team was eliminated from the SWAC Tournament after a 4-1 loss to Texas Southern on Tuesday.
Jorgina Gant took the loss for the Tigers, who finished the season with a 24-22 record. Brooklyn Morris pitched two scoreless innings with two hits allowed, no walks and one strikeout.
Jackson State scored its only run in the fifth inning. Ka’Liyah Gipson hit an RBI single, bringing home senior Mackenzie Barney from second base. The Tigers were unable to score again, and Texas Southern maintained its lead.
Texas Southern’s offense was led by Jade McQueen, who went 2 for 4 with a double and four RBIs. Zaria Turner pitched seven innings, allowing one run on seven hits. Jackson State’s pitchers faced 32 batters, recording two strikeouts while allowing seven ground balls and 11 fly balls.
The Tigers will continue their postseason run Wednesday morning, facing Prairie View A&M in an elimination game scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
