Jackson State Edges Texas Southern 3-2 in Opening Game of Andre Dawson Classic

Hederick Torres drove in three runs, including a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning, lifting Jackson State to a 3-2 victory over Texas Southern in the opening game of the Andre Dawson Classic at the Jackie Robinson Training Center on Friday.

Trailing 2-1 in the sixth, Torres hit a two-strike pitch through the left side to score Tyree Reed and Edwin Lemus Hudson Jr., giving the Tigers their first lead of the game. Christian Delgado earned the win in relief, tossing two scoreless innings with a strikeout. Jaedeyn Edwards pitched the final two innings, allowing three hits and earning his first career save. Kade Walker started for Jackson State, pitching five innings and allowing two runs on two hits with four strikeouts.

Torres finished 2-for-4 at the plate. Reed, Hudson, and Diego Melendez each recorded a hit for Jackson State. Texas Southern took an early lead in the first inning when Jonathan Trejo singled to left field, driving in a run. The Tigers tied the game in the second inning when Torres singled through the left side, scoring Hudson.

Texas Southern regained the lead in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Byron Robinson, which scored Nate Lopez. The game remained 2-1 until Jackson State’s decisive sixth, when Torres’s two-RBI single put the Tigers ahead for good. Jackson State will face Yale at 4 p.m. Saturday on the MLB Network, according to team officials.
