Hudson scores career-high 21 as Belhaven women beat Agnes Scott
Jackson, Miss. — Belhaven University’s women’s basketball team pulled away in the second half to earn a 92-61 victory over Agnes Scott on Thursday at Rugg Arena. The Blazers improved to 13-3 overall and 6-2 in the Collegiate Conference of the South.
Kiersten Hudson scored a career-high 21 points, making five of 11 three-pointers. Veronica Williams nearly posted a triple-double with 19 points, seven assists and 10 rebounds. Kyla Farmer added 11 points, and six players scored at least eight points for Belhaven.
The Blazers set the tone early with solid defense leading to quick offense. Hudson opened the scoring with a three-pointer, sparking a 10-0 run. Belhaven built a double-digit lead before the first media timeout, holding Agnes Scott to seven points in the first quarter and leading 20-7 after 10 minutes.
The second quarter saw a slowdown in pace, with Agnes Scott narrowing the deficit to single digits behind Anissa Brailsford’s rebounding and Cybele Forbes’ perimeter shooting. Belhaven responded with timely baskets, including transition scores from Veronica Williams and free throws from Katelyn Coleman. The halftime score was 36-30 in favor of the Blazers.
Belhaven came out strong in the third quarter, opening with a fast-break basket from Coleman and a three-pointer from Williams. A 17-2 run ensued, with Hudson contributing back-to-back three-pointers and transition layups. The Blazers outscored Agnes Scott 33-14 in the quarter to lead 69-44 going into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, Belhaven extended its lead with inside scoring from RaMya King and Amanda Walker, and free throws from Tra’Shaylah Wilson. Hudson added another fast-break layup to reach a career-high 21 points. Though Agnes Scott received late points from Forbes and Brailsford, the outcome was never in doubt. The Blazers finished with a 31-point victory.
