Grambling Opens Baseball Season With Win Over Alcorn
LORMAN, Miss. — Grambling State opened its baseball season with an 11-1 victory over Alcorn in a non-conference matchup Friday at Trustmark Park. The game was part of the HBCU Power Series presented by Major League Baseball.
Grambling scored in each of the first five innings, building a commanding lead early. Tigers catcher Chris Marcellus put his team ahead in the first inning with a two-run home run off Alcorn starter Devin Kriley. The Tigers extended their lead to 10-0 in the fifth inning, with Trey Bridges scoring on a fielder’s choice to third base.
Alcorn finally scored in the eighth inning when Jamir Holloway singled to shallow center, allowing Nico Garcia to score. However, Bridges scored on a failed pickoff attempt by relief pitcher Nicholas Johnson, ending the game via the run rule with an 11-1 final score.
Starting pitcher Keevyn Goss earned the win, tossing four hitless innings with four walks and three strikeouts. Kriley took the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits over two innings. Marcellus finished 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs for Grambling.
Alcorn’s offense was led by Holloway, who had a hit, and Rayfield Adams III, who picked up his first hit of the season from the leadoff spot. The Braves will face Prairie View A&M on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in their second game of the weekend series.
