Georgia holds off late Mississippi State rally for 10-9 win

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Georgia edged Mississippi State 10-9 Thursday night at Dudy Noble Field, despite a late rally by the Bulldogs from Starkville. Georgia, ranked fifth, built a sizable early lead and managed to withstand MSU’s late surge, earning the win over the fourth-ranked team.

Georgia jumped ahead early, with Tre Phelps hitting a three-run homer in the second inning to give UGA a 4-0 lead. The Bulldogs continued to add runs, including a four-run fifth inning that extended their advantage to 10-2. Mississippi State responded with a rally in the seventh, scoring five runs to cut the deficit to 10-7. MSU’s comeback continued into the ninth, loading the bases and scoring two more runs before falling short.

MSU’s offense was led by Gehrig Frei, who had three hits. Ryder Woodson drove in three runs, and Aidan Teel sparked the late rally with a home run. Eight different players recorded at least one hit for the Bulldogs. Georgia’s Phelps led the visitors with three hits and four RBIs, including the early home run. Georgia starter Joey Volchko earned the win after allowing two runs over five innings, while MSU’s Charlie Foster took the loss after giving up five runs in two innings.

The teams will meet again Friday at 6 p.m., with MSU sending left-hander Tomas Valincius and Georgia countering with Dylan Vigue. The game will be streamed on SEC Network+.
