Georgia Beats Mississippi State in Super Regional Thriller

ATHENS, Ga. — Mississippi State’s offense produced a season-high 15 hits and six home runs but fell short Saturday in a 13-12 loss to Georgia in the opening game of the Athens Super Regional.

The Bulldogs (50-12) took an early lead with a six-run second inning but were ultimately overtaken by Georgia (43-18), which rallied with a three-run homer from Mike O’Shaughnessy in the eighth inning. The game featured 25 runs, 31 hits and 11 home runs overall.

Mississippi State built its lead in the second inning, highlighted by Reed Stallman’s three-run homer. Kevin Milewski added a solo shot in the fourth, and Gehrig Frei, Reese, Stallman, Ryder Woodson, and Milewski each homered for the Bulldogs. Milewski went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs.

Georgia responded in the bottom half of the inning, with Daniel Jackson and Rylan Lujo each hitting solo homers. The Bulldogs took the lead in the fifth behind a two-run homer from O’Shaughnessy and a two-run double from Kolby Branch. Mississippi State fought back to tie the game multiple times, with solo homers from Milewski and Gehrig Frei in the sixth and Ryder Woodson in the seventh.

In the eighth, Mississippi State regained the lead with a solo homer from Reese and a bases-loaded walk from Milewski. However, Georgia’s O’Shaughnessy hit his second home run of the game, a three-run shot, to give the Bulldogs a 13-12 lead. Justin Byrd earned his eighth save for Georgia, while Dane Burns took the loss for Mississippi State.

Mississippi State will try to extend its season on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT, with sophomore Ryan McPherson starting on the mound. Georgia will look to advance with graduate right-hander Caden Aoki on the hill, as the Bulldogs seek to clinch the series.
