Gene and Dot Murphy to be Inducted into Mississippi Community College Sports Hall of Fame

Raymond, Miss. — Gene and Dot Murphy are set to be inducted into the Mississippi Community College Sports Hall of Fame on April 28. The ceremony begins at 6 p.m. at the Muse Center on the Rankin Campus in Pearl.

The Murphys are among the most influential figures in Hinds Community College athletics history. Their leadership and success over decades have established a legacy of excellence and national recognition.

Dot Murphy made history in 1984 as the first female football coach in NJCAA history. Her groundbreaking role drew national attention and was featured in a 1996 NFL-produced documentary that earned an Emmy Award. She was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1999 and will be enshrined in the NJCAA Hall of Fame in 2025. An accomplished athlete, Murphy won two state championships at Starkville High School, scored 2,772 points, and earned multiple All-State honors. She continued her career at Mississippi University for Women, where she surpassed 1,000 points and won a national championship. Murphy also represented the United States at the 1972 and 1973 World University Games, earning a silver medal in Moscow.

Gene Murphy also built a distinguished career. A former standout linebacker at East Mississippi Community College, he was inducted into the EMCC Hall of Fame in 2012. As Hinds’ head football coach from 1987 to 2003 and again starting in 2009, Murphy compiled a 172-76-5 record. His teams won six state and regional championships, including four consecutive titles from 1994 to 1997. He coached 36 NJCAA All-Americans, two national players of the year, and helped 57 former Eagles reach the NFL. During his tenure, Hinds made 14 playoff appearances, earned 12 division titles, and participated in eight national bowl games.
