East Mississippi Tops Southwest Mississippi in Women’s Basketball
Southwest Mississippi’s women’s basketball team lost to East Mississippi 71-51 on Thursday in Scooba. The game was part of the conference schedule.
In the opening quarter, both teams played evenly, ending 10-10. Kori Ware scored six of the Lady Bears’ 10 points in that period. Southwest maintained a narrow lead at 22-21 at halftime.
East Mississippi started the second half strong, opening with a quick three-pointer to take the lead. The Lady Bears responded to tie the game at 30-30 with 4:30 remaining in the third quarter. However, the Lions heated up, hitting another three and pulling away. They finished the quarter leading 46-33.
In the final period, Southwest scored 18 points, but East Mississippi added 25, sealing the victory. Ware led the Lady Bears with 12 points. Gracie Miller and Mady Smith each scored eight points.
Head coach Brent Harris said the team played with effort but experienced mental lapses. “We had some mental lapses and it led to big runs, and we just have to weather that right now,” he said. The Lady Bears, now 5-12 overall and 1-3 in conference, will host Holmes on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
