Delta State Softball Drops Doubleheader at Gulf Shores Invitational
GULF SHORES, Ala. — The Delta State University softball team fell in both games of a doubleheader Sunday at the Gulf Shores Invitational. The Lady Statesmen lost to Saint Leo University, ranked nationally, 7-3, and to the University of North Georgia, 6-0.
In the first game, Saint Leo jumped to a 4-0 lead through the first three innings. Delta State responded in the fourth, with Nevaeh Lopez hitting a double to score Kyleigh Wheaton and Mary Teague, trimming the deficit to 4-2. Wheaton finished 2-for-2 at the plate. In the sixth inning, Wheaton tripled, setting up Hallie Turner for an RBI single that brought Delta State within one run. Saint Leo scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning to pull away, ultimately winning 7-3.
The second game saw North Georgia’s pitching staff hold Delta State scoreless. The Nighthawks scored two runs in the fourth inning and added four more in the fifth to secure a 6-0 victory. Wheaton, Callie McConnell, and Joryie McKnight each recorded a hit for the Lady Statesmen.
