Christian Brothers tops Delta State 8-3 in baseball
Delta State University’s baseball team fell to Christian Brothers 8-3 Sunday at Ferriss Field in Cleveland, Mississippi. The Buccaneers led from the start and never relinquished the lead.
Christian Brothers scored one run in the first inning and broke the game open with four runs in the third. They added single runs in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings to build an 8-0 lead in the middle of the seventh.
The Statesmen responded in the fifth inning, scoring three runs. Stone Collier drew a walk, Cooper Walls doubled, and Austin Estes drove in two runs with a single to center. Estes later stole home as part of a double-steal to cut the deficit to 7-3. He finished with two hits, two RBIs, and two stolen bases.
Tucker Jones added two hits, including a double, and Walls recorded a double and a run scored. On the mound, Aidan McCrady took the loss after allowing four runs in 2.1 innings. The bullpen pitched 6.2 innings, with Ryan Herbison tossing three scoreless frames to close the game.
Christian Brothers’ Will Gossett went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, and Zowen Collins homered in the fifth. The Buccaneers totaled 11 hits and drew nine walks. Delta State left runners on base in the sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth innings. Relief pitcher Thomas Leiden shut down the Statesmen over the final four frames.
Delta State will travel next week to face Arkansas at Monticello on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Central Time.
