Bethune-Cookman Edges Alcorn State in Daytona
Alcorn State’s men’s basketball team lost 82-73 to Bethune-Cookman on Monday night at Moore Gymnasium in Daytona Beach. The Wildcats surged early, leading 45-31 at halftime after shooting over 60% from the field in the first half.
Alcorn remained competitive early, exchanging leads in the opening minutes. However, Bethune-Cookman capitalized on transition baskets and second-chance opportunities to build a double-digit lead before the break. The Braves responded in the second half, outscoring the Wildcats 42-37 and improving their shooting to 47.1% in the final 20 minutes. They also won the second-half rebounding battle and created additional possessions, applying pressure on the home team.
Shane Lancaster led Alcorn with 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Tycen McDaniels added 14 points and eight rebounds, while Omari Hamilton provided a spark off the bench with 11 points and four rebounds. Nick Woodard contributed 10 points and five rebounds. The Braves scored 40 points in the paint and dominated second-chance points 19-6, reflecting their effort on the offensive glass. They forced 13 turnovers, converting them into 11 fast-break points.
Bethune-Cookman’s top scorer was Daniel Rouzan with 24 points, while Jakobi Heady added 20. Despite Alcorn trimming the margin to single digits late, timely baskets and free throws allowed the Wildcats to close out the game. The Braves will host Southern on Saturday at the Davey L. Whitney Complex, aiming to build on their second-half momentum.
