Belhaven Women’s Basketball Tops Covenant 61-47 in CCS Action
JACKSON, Miss. — Belhaven University’s women’s basketball team defeated Covenant 61-47 on Friday afternoon inside Rugg Arena. The win improves the Blazers’ record to 17-6 overall and 10-5 in Conference of Christian Schools play.
Hudson led Belhaven with 12 points, while Coleman added 11. Edwards finished with 10 points off the bench. King and Jenkins each scored nine, as the team placed five players in double figures or near double figures during the game.
The Scots opened the scoring with a three-pointer from Emma Kaye Fuller, but Belhaven responded quickly. An 18-5 run midway through the first quarter, highlighted by baskets from Coleman, Williams, Jenkins, and Hudson, put the Blazers in control. Belhaven led 18-8 after the opening period, having held Covenant to 3-for-16 shooting in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Covenant cut into the lead with contributions from Amanda Neff and Karrie Gaines, bringing the margin to eight. Belhaven responded with a run, including back-to-back three-pointers from Kamren Edwards and points inside from RaMya King. A jumper from King at the 5:42 mark pushed the lead back to double digits. The Blazers carried a 32-24 advantage into halftime.
Belhaven extended its lead in the third quarter, with a 13-3 surge that built a 45-31 gap. Key plays included consecutive fast-break layups from Coleman and a tip-in from Jenkins. Covenant’s Violet Wright scored late in the quarter, but the Blazers maintained a 45-34 lead heading into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, Belhaven kept control. Jenkins and Edwards scored inside early, and Covenant’s Hall and Wright hit three-pointers to narrow the gap to 12. Hudson responded with a three-pointer and two free throws, restoring a 14-point lead. King sealed the victory with a late three, extending the margin to 17 points. Covenant scored late points from Wright at the line, but the Blazers held on for the 61-47 win.
Belhaven concludes its regular season Saturday against Wesleyan for Senior Day.
