Belhaven Tennis Teams Fall to MUW in Thursday Matches
The Belhaven men’s and women’s tennis teams played at Parham Bridges in Jackson, Mississippi, on Thursday, suffering defeats against MUW. The men’s team lost 6-2, while the women’s team fell 6-3, according to school officials.
MUW claimed the doubles point on the men’s side with wins at all three doubles positions, giving the Owls early control of the team score. Belhaven responded in singles, with Harshith Anugonda earning a straight-set victory at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-3. Jesus Diaz also secured a win at No. 2 singles with scores of 6-3, 6-2. MUW clinched the team victory with wins at Nos. 3, 4, and 5 singles. The No. 6 match between Jack Madden and Dylan Barber was unfinished after splitting the first two sets.
On the women’s side, Belhaven delivered its strongest performance of the season. The Blazers opened with a doubles win as Millie Gallarno and Rebekah Nichols defeated their opponents 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. In singles, Nichols continued her solid play with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1. Gallarno fought through a three-set match, winning 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 2. It marked the first singles victory of the spring for both players after challenging matches against Southwest Mississippi and East Central.
Additional singles results included Evey Moore, who fell after a hard-fought battle at No. 3, and Arica Eason, who pushed her opponent to three sets at No. 5 but ultimately lost the deciding frame. The Blazers are scheduled to host Mobile on Saturday at 1 p.m., continuing their spring season.
