Belhaven Alumnus Andrew West Reflects on His Time as a Blazer

Andrew West chose Belhaven University for its highly regarded soccer program and its 2012 national championship win, according to a recent interview. He also noted that a close friend, Craig McCabe, was attending the school, which influenced his decision.

One of West’s favorite memories as a Blazer was beating Martin Methodist in overtime in 2014. The victory ended a streak of three losses to the team in 2013, including two double-overtime defeats and one in the conference tournament final. West said he was very happy to finally get the win and put that chapter behind him.

West’s most cherished moment as a student-athlete was having his family in town for his graduation in 2016. He also expressed that he misses playing soccer daily and forming lifelong friendships during his time at Belhaven.

Since graduating, West has stayed involved with soccer by coaching at the club level with Mississippi Rush/JFC, at the collegiate level with Mississippi College, and at the high school level with Madison Ridgeland Academy from 2016 to 2019. He currently enjoys watching matches on TV and attending local tournaments.

He named Cillian Thompson, a box-to-box midfielder known for his dribbling skills and size 18 feet, as the best player he played with during his time at Belhaven.
