Belhaven Alum William Ward Reflects on 1992 National Championship and Soccer Career

William Ward, a member of Belhaven University’s 1992 NAIA national championship team, reflected on his college soccer experience and the impact it has had on his life. The Jackson, Mississippi, native shared stories during an interview with Coach Gleddy about influential figures and memorable moments.

Ward credited Coach Peter Fuller for shaping his decision to attend Belhaven. He described Fuller as a pivotal influence, having coached him at the AFC club in Jackson. Ward also praised Fuller’s role in the Jackson soccer community and his structured, competitive coaching style.

During his time at Belhaven from 1991 to 1995, Ward highlighted Sheldon Bennett as the best teammate. He recalled Bennett’s consistency and leadership on the field. Ward also expressed nostalgia for the camaraderie among teammates, especially during road trips and dorm life.

The highlight of his college career was winning the 1992 NAIA title. He recalled the team’s talent, much of it from Jackson, and the surreal feeling of victory. In spring 1993, Ward scored a notable goal against NCAA Division I champion Virginia, coached then by Bruce Arena, with Claudio Reyna as captain. He described it as a memorable moment to score against such high-level competition.

Today, Ward stays connected to soccer through his son Will’s participation in club and high school teams. As Will prepares for college, Ward plans to attend more Belhaven games and continue following Manchester United, his favorite club. He emphasized the lasting influence of Coach Fuller, who helped shape many players’ careers in Jackson and beyond.
