Arkansas State beats Southern Miss 8-5 in Sun Belt baseball opener

JONESBORO, Ark. — Arkansas State scored four runs in the seventh inning to rally past No. 7 Southern Miss 8-5 Friday night at Tomlinson Stadium in the Sun Belt Conference opener for both teams.

The Red Wolves (14-5, 1-0 Sun Belt) broke a 3-3 tie with a four-run seventh, highlighted by a double from Aidan Houseworth that cleared the bases. Cason Campbell added an RBI single to extend the lead to four runs. Arkansas State added an insurance run in the eighth on Patrick Engskov’s RBI single.

Southern Miss (15-3, 0-1) attempted a rally in the ninth, scoring two runs. Freshman Gray Eubanks, in his first college at-bat, reached on an error, and Joey Urban followed with a single. Davis Gillespie then drove in two runs with a single, but the Golden Eagles couldn’t complete the comeback, ending the game with groundouts.

Southern Miss took an early 3-0 lead in the third inning, with Joey Urban hitting a three-run homer after a walk and a bunt error. Arkansas State responded with a run in the third on Lane Walton’s RBI single, then tied the game with Kaden Amundson’s first homer of the year.

Starter Colby Allen pitched five innings for Southern Miss, allowing three runs on six hits. Camden Sunstrom (1-1) took the loss after surrendering four runs in 1 1/3 innings. Tyler Weimber (3-0) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win for Arkansas State.

The teams continue the series Saturday at 6 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and broadcast on the Southern Miss Sports Network.
